Place des Epices is a charming tree-shaded square in the northern Medina, surrounded by stalls selling aromatic spices, natural cosmetics, woven baskets, dried herbs, and traditional remedies. Unlike the frenetic energy of the main souks, this square has a more relaxed pace with several rooftop cafes offering views over the spice stalls below. The spice sellers here specialise in Ras el Hanout blends, saffron, dried rosebuds, argan oil, and black soap. The basket weavers produce colourful palm-leaf baskets, bags, and decorative pieces. Several natural cosmetics stalls sell argan oil products, rose water, ghassoul clay, and kohl.

“Place des Epices is the calmer, more authentic alternative to the main souk strip. The Ras el Hanout blends here are genuinely better quality than the tourist stalls. Buy saffron from the guy in the northeast corner — he sells real saffron, not dyed safflower. The rooftop cafes (Nomad, Le Jardin) are excellent for lunch with a view.”
