Kyle Phillips championship design with dramatic Atlas foothills elevation
Al Maaden Golf Resort is Marrakech's most challenging and visually dramatic 18-hole course, designed by the acclaimed Kyle Phillips — the architect behind Kingsbarns in Scotland — in the Atlas Mountain foothills south of the city. Playing par 73 over 7,100+ yards from the back tees, Al Maaden is a proper championship test with elevation changes of up to 40 meters between tee and green, demanding club selection decisions that catch out even experienced visitors. The back nine in particular is relentless — uphill carries into prevailing winds, deep ravine hazards, and terraced greens that slope away from the Atlas views. The design uses natural wadis (dry riverbeds) as natural hazards throughout, giving the course an authentically Moroccan feel rather than the imported-turf aesthetic of some competitors. Atlas views from the clubhouse terrace are among the finest in Marrakech. Green fees run 800-1,200 MAD for 18 holes — mid-range for the quality. Handicap certificate may be requested. Summer play should include early morning tee times and mandatory buggy; the back 9 elevation changes are genuinely punishing in 40°C heat.

“Back 9 elevation changes brutal in summer — buggy + water essential. Clubhouse terrace lunch is top-tier.”
